or for 24-Hour Crisis Help 303-853-35002012 Annual Report Suicide Prevention Strategies for Foster Parents Every year in the United States, more than 4,000 youth and young adults die by suicide. Approximately 130,000 others are treated in emergency rooms for injuries from self harm (CDC, 2010). Fortunately, there are steps foster parents can take to identify at-risk youth and get help. Many young people who are thinking of killing themselves exhibit warning signs—behaviors and statements that indicate a high level of risk. Knowing the warning signs and risk factors can help foster parents intervene and get the youth connected to help.
