Mary Ciancio Memorial Distinguished Service Award Dinner - April 18, 2013 The Community Reach Center Foundation proudly recognizes the contributions of extraordinary volunteers in our community at the annual Mary Ciancio Memorial Distinguished Service Awards Dinner, held in April in honor of National Volunteer Week. Two awards are presented. The Mary Ciancio Memorial Distinguished Service Award, which began in 1979, is named in honor of the late Mary Ciancio and her many years of community service on behalf of Adams County residents with mental and physical disabilities. In 2007, Community Reach Center created the Annual Marjory Ball Mental Health Advocacy Award to commemorate Emeritus Board Member Marjory Ball's role as a major advocate for individuals living with mental health challenges. Congratulations to Valerie Escatel who was honored with the 2013 Mary Ciancio Memorial Distinguished Service Award for her volunteer efforts to strengthen Brighton small businesses. The award was presented at the Mary Ciancio Memorial Distinguished Service Award dinner hosted by Community Reach Center, on April 18th at Stonebrook Manor in Westminster. Escatel was instrumental in creating the Brighton Small Business Resource Center (now the North Metro Denver Small Business Development Center) in 2003. She is a member of the Brighton and the Fort Lupton Chambers of Commerce; the Boys and Girls Club Advisory Committee; the Hispanic Advisory Committee, where she started a parenting group; and a past member of the 27J School Board. “The entire communities of Brighton, Fort Lupton and Wattenburg have benefitted from Valerie’s passion and time,” wrote Teri Sanchez of SBDC in nominating Escatel. “You cannot go anywhere with Valerie that someone does not come up to thank her for her time and commitment.”
Retired Adams County Undersheriff Paul Siska was presented the Marjory Ball Mental Health Advocacy Award for his commitment to improving access to mental-health services in Adams County. Siska, a member of Community Reach Center's Systems Board, helped create Community Reach Center's jail diversion program (CESE) and played a crucial role in bringing the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training to Adams County law enforcement. Siska also is a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor, teaching the 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course throughout Adams County and for law enforcement throughout Colorado.
"Paul Siska has successfully leveraged his position as a volunteer Board member at Community Reach Center and a leader in law enforcement to advocate for improved access and increased funding for mental-health services in the community, based on his unwavering belief that improved mental-healthcare equates to improved health and safety for all communities," said John D. Parker, president of Community Reach Center's Foundation Board, who presented the award to Siska.
Other Adams County residents recognized for their extensive volunteering efforts include Jo Edgar, Carol Hastings and Sean Reif, D.C., all of Thornton; Rosie Garner of Northglenn; Ron Hellbusch of Westminster; Kevin O’Connell of Brighton; Robin O’Dorisio of Denver; and Catherine Roberts of Dupont.
